About Office Visits

What Happens in an Office Visit?

Doctor Shiller is very thorough and attentive.  Many people have said that they never had such a comprehensive evaluation.  That includes a careful history,  detailed physical examination, review of any relevant data and ordering of additional testing if needed.

Dr. Shiller  evaluates your situation with the knowledge and perspective of a Harvard-trained medical doctor, who has 20 years of experience with 30-40,000 patient encounters.  He also has extensive experience and knowledge of several complementary healing systems including Osteopathy, MindBody Medicine, Spiritual Psychology, Functional Medicine, Yoga and Tai Chi.

Dr. Shiller endeavors to provide the highest level of attention and care so that he understands the problem and its impact on your life. He learns about you as an individual, so he understands your values and goals. Then he takes the time to help you understand the problem, and together with you, develop a treatment plan that is best for you.

What Does He Actually Do to Help Your Problem?

Many practitioners have “an approach”–the technique that they use on all their patients.  But every patient is different.  So Dr. Shiller’s approach is tailored to you.  It’s called personalized medicine.

Regardless of your conventional medical diagnosis, the suffering and dysfunction underlying most problems stem from some combination of Mechanical/structural, Metabolic/biochemical, and MindBody imbalances.

His skill is to clarify what are the most important issues, and what are the best treatments to address those issues.  As such, Dr Shiller’s therapeutic toolbox includes the breadth of conventional medical treatments, as well as Osteopathic Manual Treatment, Functional Medicine (a scientific approach to correct metabolic disturbances and optimize biochemical functioning), Visual Imagery, spiritual counseling, and Mindfulness.

If he doesn’t have the tool to help you, he refers to providers in the community, which can include other physicians, health coaches, physical therapy, acupuncture, manual therapy, massage, pilates, yoga, tai chi, homeopathy, and various counseling and mind-body techniques. If necessary, he will communicate and coordinate with your other providers to assure that your treatment plan is cohesive and effective.   Then he walks the road with you to see how you respond, and fine tune the healing process.

FAQs About Office Visits

Virtual Visits?

If you can’t come to the office, you can schedule a virtual visit.  A virtual visit is an excellent way for you to maintain contact with Dr Shiller, or to ‘meet’ him for the first time.  Much can be done about chronic problems in a virtual visit. Scroll down to learn more about virtual visits.

What Is Osteopathic Manual Treatment?

Osteopathic Manual Treatment is a hands-on approach to helping the body heal itself.  It is a set of principles and techniques that help the body function more effectively. Dr. Shiller uses gentle techniques that balance ligaments, muscles, nerve and brain function, to allow free flow of fluid and vitality.   He doesn’t “crack backs.” Treatment is done fully clothed. Most people find treatment extremely relaxing and pleasant.  Many find they get a great night’s sleep after treatment.

What is Functional Medicine?

Functional medicine is an approach to understanding the root cause of disease.  It uses a systems-oriented approach that understands the interconnected functioning of all the body systems that are so often treated as independent by conventional medicine. It engages the patient and practitioner in therapeutic partnership to address the whole person and their lifestyle. The doctor will spend more time with you, taking a very careful history to find the factors that predispose, trigger, or perpetuate the problem. This includes the interaction of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that influence long-term health and chronic disease.

Virtual Visits

If you’re facing a new or chronic and debilitating health problem, you want to know your options in order to make the right choices in treatment and healing.  You might be frustrated by the “add more medications to control symptoms approach”.  You know it’s even more difficult to find a caring doctor who knows how to think out-of-the-box and find the root of the problem.  It can be hard to find a doctor who takes the time to truly understand the issues, and to help you understand things.

If you don’t have access to an integrative medical doctor where you live. A virtual visit might be helpful.

Modern science is starting to understand the roots of many chronic illnesses and pain syndromes.  And it turns out that many of these diseases are strongly influenced by lifestyle choices–nutrition, stress, physical activity, environmental factors, etc.  That’s where Functional Medicine comes in. Functional medicine is an approach used by many integrative medicine practitioners. It’s based on systems-biology and cutting edge research, and helps us understand and uproot chronic illness and difficult-to-treat problems. That includes issues like fibromyalgia, inflammatory arthritis, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, bowel disease, chronic stroke and brain injury.

Over the years, Dr. Shiller has helped thousands of people navigate the maze of diagnostic and treatment decisions to heal difficult pain syndromes and manage complex health problems.

Many so-called “hopeless” problems of pain and disability are not really hopeless. Dr. Shiller has found that people just like you recover better if they understand their circumstances, are empowered to make good choices and follow the right map. Let him light the way and be the quarterback of your healing team!

Benefits of a Virtual Visit with Dr. Shiller Include:

  • Speak with a trusted expert; a board-certified MD who will listen and understand things from your perspective, and draw on decades of experience with 30-40,000 patient visits.
  • Learn to understand your pain, illness, or injury, and process of recovery, in language that makes sense to you.
  • Evaluation the problem from a systems perspective that can address root cause of your illness or pain.

What People Say about Virtual Visits

“Absolutely the best, I recommend Dr. Andrew David Shiller as highly as I possibly can, he understands my problems better than anyone else I have ever spoken to. He is kind, knowledgeable, patient and understanding. I can’t possibly say enough good things about him. Thank you.” -Matt M., Ohio “He was very intelligent and quick to understand my issue. Very helpful and considerate of my time. Will call again when in need of some expert advice.” -B.R.,  Florida “I was struggling with my 70 year old uncle who just had a stroke. “How did this happen? One moment he was fine, and the next thing he is on the floor and has no body control.  Was it genetic? Should I be concerned for my health?” I was not clear how I felt but I had so much rolling around in my mind. Using only his words, Dr. Shiller painted a perfectly clear picture of how the body works, how events such as stroke happen and how recovery works. He delved into the entire experience for the patient and family, including recovery, but also discussing how insurance works, understanding different therapies and why one might be better than another. Interestingly, another relative of mine had done tons of research on the internet over the course of days about what this condition is, how it happened, etc. In my conversation with this person, it was obvious that disparate facts of internet research were not comparable to a comprehensive, personal and intimate conversation with an expert in the field. I had a real sense of what was going on and I didn’t do a single search on the internet.” -J.L.,  New York
